FOSS for All Microgrants

FOSS for All Microgrants pools donations to help free and open source projects and communities cover development and operating costs. The program began as a pilot in 2026.

Projects need funds for costs such as servers, cloud services, development equipment, and community events. Microgrants helps cover these costs and reduces the administrative work of managing funds, so projects and communities can keep their activities going.

How support works

Selected projects and communities submit expense requests, and FOSS for All handles payments and accounting. In the 2026 pilot, we prefer direct payments to vendors. Costs that require automatic recurring payments can be reimbursed after supporting documents are checked. Support is not paid as a lump sum to recipients.

The program also helps us establish donation and grant administration procedures and gain experience with the payment and accounting work that fiscal sponsorship involves. Broader fiscal sponsorship remains a long-term goal. Fiscal sponsorship helps projects and communities raise and manage funds without having to establish their own legal entities.

Programs by year

Each year’s page lists the selected projects and communities and explains the funding amounts and payment process.
